DiBond vs. Chromadek: Which Sign Material Is Right for Your Project?

When you’re ordering rigid outdoor or indoor signage, choosing the right substrate is just as important as the print quality itself. Two of the heavy-hitters in the sign industry are Aluminium Composite (DiBond) and Chromadek.

At a glance, they both look like sleek, rigid boards ready for print. But under the hood, they behave very differently. Choosing the wrong one can mean dealing with unnecessary weight, flex, or long-term weathering issues.

Here is how to break down the choice for your next project.

The 4 key differences between DiBond and Chromadek

1. Weight & Handling

  • DiBond: Consists of two thin aluminium sheets bonded to a solid polyethylene (plastic) core. It is significantly lighter than steel-backed panels of the same thickness, making it much easier to transport, handle, and mount—especially for high-up wall installations or when using architectural standoff brackets.
  • Chromadek: Built on a galvanized steel sheet. It is heavier and structurally robust, which is why it has traditionally been the standard for rugged outdoor site boards and fence mounting.

2. Rust & Corrosion Resistance

  • DiBond: Because it uses aluminium skins and a plastic core, it will never rust. It is completely immune to moisture degradation, making it the superior choice for high-humidity, wet, or coastal environments where edge-creep can eventually attack steel.
  • Chromadek: Features a galvanized steel substrate with a baked enamel paint system. While highly durable, if raw cut edges are exposed to persistent moisture over years, steel can eventually show signs of oxidation.

3. Surface Flatness & Aesthetics

  • DiBond: Provides an ultra-flat, mirror-smooth surface with zero waviness. This makes it the go-to material for high-end architectural, corporate, and retail signage where a luxury, flawless finish is critical.
  • Chromadek: Also offers a clean, professional painted finish, but across very large unsupported expanses, steel can occasionally exhibit minor surface tension ripples.

4. Magnetic Properties

  • Chromadek: Because it is steel-based, it is magnetic. This is a handy niche advantage if a client needs to attach magnetic notices, interchangeable panels, or temporary overlays to the sign face.
  • DiBond: Non-magnetic (aluminium and plastic).
